Abstract
This article examines the use of similes as stylistic and rhetorical
devices in English and Romanian academic writing from a contrastive
perspective. While similes are traditionally associated with
literary discourse, they also function as legitimate explanatory
tools in academic prose, particularly in reader-oriented traditions.
The study argues that English academic writing tolerates and
strategically employs explicit similes for pedagogical clarity and
conceptual accessibility, whereas Romanian academic writing
generally favors abstraction, nominalization, and terminological
precision, often suppressing or reformulating similes. Through
qualitative analysis of constructed academic-style examples and
stylistic patterns, the article highlights systemic differences in
rhetorical preference and academic convention, with implications for
academic writing, translation, and second-language instruction.
1. Introduction
Figurative language has long occupied an ambiguous position in
discussions of academic style. Traditionally perceived as
incompatible with objectivity and precision, devices such as
metaphors and similes were often excluded from prescriptive models
of scholarly discourse. More recent approaches to academic writing,
however, recognize figurative language as a cognitive and
explanatory resource, particularly in disciplines dealing with
abstraction and theoretical modeling (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980;
Hyland, 2005).
Among figurative devices, similes occupy a relatively safe stylistic
position due to their explicit comparative structure, which limits
interpretive ambiguity. This article explores how similes function
differently in English and Romanian academic writing, arguing that
their acceptability is shaped by broader rhetorical traditions
rather than by grammatical constraints alone.
2. Theoretical Framework
2.1 Similes in Academic Discourse
A simile is typically defined as an explicit comparison between two
entities, introduced by markers such as like or as in English and
ca, precum, or asemenea in Romanian. Unlike metaphors, similes
preserve the ontological separation between the compared domains,
thereby maintaining analytical distance.
In academic discourse, similes serve primarily:
• an explanatory function,
• a didactic function,
• a conceptual scaffolding function.
Halliday (1994) notes that academic language often balances
grammatical metaphor and congruent expression; similes represent a
form of controlled congruence that aids interpretation without
undermining formality.
2.2 Contrastive Rhetoric and Academic Style
Contrastive rhetoric studies have demonstrated that academic writing
conventions vary significantly across languages and cultures
(Kaplan, 1966; Connor, 1996). English academic writing is commonly
characterized as:

The present study adopts a qualitative contrastive analysis
approach. Rather than relying on corpus frequency counts, it
examines stylistically representative academic constructions based
on:
• established conventions in English and Romanian academic prose,
• pedagogical and scholarly models used in linguistics and social
sciences,
• contrastive rewriting strategies observed in translation
practice.
Pairs of English and Romanian examples are analyzed side by side to
identify:
• structural differences,
• stylistic preferences,
• rhetorical motivations behind the presence or absence of
similes.
This approach is suitable for stylistic inquiry, where acceptability
and function are often more revealing than raw frequency.
4.1 Explanatory Similes and Abstraction
English academic writing frequently employs similes to explain
abstract processes:
Language evolves like a living organism, adapting to social
pressures.
The Romanian equivalent typically avoids the simile:
Limba evoluează sub influența presiunilor sociale, conform unor
mecanisme dinamice.
Here, the Romanian version replaces analogy with processual
abstraction, reflecting a preference for conceptual density over
explanatory imagery.
4.2 Pedagogical Function
In instructional or introductory academic texts, English uses
similes to scaffold understanding:
The curriculum functions like a framework supporting progressive
learning.
Romanian permits the comparative marker ca, but restricts imagery:
Curriculumul funcționează ca o structură de susținere a
învățării progresive.
The simile is lexicalized and neutralized, losing its illustrative
force.
4.3 Scientific and Technical Contexts
In technical explanation, English retains similes for accessibility:
The system behaves like a feedback loop.
Romanian reformulates terminologically:
Sistemul prezintă un mecanism de autoreglare bazat pe feedback.
This reflects a tendency toward terminologization, where explicit
comparison is replaced by specialized nouns.
4.4 Hypothetical Comparisons
English often employs as if constructions to signal interpretive
caution:
The text appears as if it were detached from its historical context.
Romanian eliminates the comparative hedge:
Textul pare desprins de contextul său istoric.
The result is a more categorical and authoritative tone, consistent
with Romanian academic norms.
5. Translation and Pedagogical Implications
5.1 Translation Strategies
When translating English academic similes into Romanian, translators
frequently apply:
1. Simile omission
2. Nominalization
3. Terminological substitution
Conversely, Romanian-to-English translation often requires
re-explicitation, especially for international academic audiences
accustomed to reader guidance.
5.2 Implications for EFL and Academic Writing Instruction
Romanian learners of academic English often underuse similes due to
transfer from L1 norms. Explicit instruction can help students:
• recognize acceptable similes,
• avoid poetic excess,
• use analogy strategically for clarity.
6. Conclusion
This contrastive analysis demonstrates that similes function as
legitimate, though differently valued, devices in English and
Romanian academic writing. English academic discourse integrates
similes as reader-oriented explanatory tools, whereas Romanian
academic prose favors abstraction, implicit relations, and
terminological economy. These differences reflect deeper rhetorical
traditions rather than deficiencies in stylistic competence.
