During my teaching activity, I have realized that an English textbook is an important starting point, but students also need activities that help them use the language in real situations. English lessons should offer students opportunities to communicate, collaborate and express their own ideas.
In my classes, I have noticed that students are more motivated when they become active participants in the learning process. A grammar exercise or a vocabulary activity becomes more meaningful when it is connected to a practical task. For this reason, interactive activities represent an important part of my teaching approach.
In a lower secondary classroom, students often have different levels of knowledge and confidence. Some students participate easily, while others need more encouragement and practical activities in order to express themselves. Creating a positive learning environment where students are not afraid of making mistakes is essential.
One effective method used in my classroom is the use of conversation cards. These resources encourage students to answer questions, share opinions and practise vocabulary and grammar structures in a natural way. Conversation activities help learners become more confident when speaking English.
Role-play activities are another useful strategy. By creating real-life situations, such as asking for information, having a conversation, planning an activity or expressing opinions, students understand that English is not only a school subject, but a useful communication tool.
Pair work and group activities also play an important role. They encourage cooperation and allow students to learn from each other. These activities give every student the possibility to participate according to their abilities and become more involved during the lesson.
Digital resources can increase students’ interest and motivation. Interactive worksheets, presentations and creative tools help teachers design attractive materials adapted to students’ needs. Technology should not replace traditional teaching, but it can complete it and make the learning process more engaging.
A good example of classroom practice is combining textbook activities with interactive tasks. After learning new vocabulary or grammar structures, students can use the information through dialogues, games, projects or creative activities. This approach helps them understand the practical value of learning a foreign language.
These examples are part of my daily teaching practice and have shown that even simple activities can increase students’ participation and confidence in using English.
The main purpose of an English lesson should not be only learning rules and completing exercises, but helping students become confident users of the language. Communication, creativity and collaboration are important skills that students develop step by step.
In conclusion, going beyond the textbook does not mean giving up traditional methods. It means completing them with activities that make students more active and involved. Interactive strategies and digital resources can help us create a classroom where students feel more confident, motivated and willing to learn.
